Lots of tiny heart urchins (sea potatoes) left by the tide. Covered with hairy spines the urchin lives buried in the sand. Only these fragile off-white tests (skeletons) remain after the creature dies. You can see its little mouth on the underside of its heart-shaped test. Why are there so many complete tiny tests washed ashore, and how (why) did they die? If eaten surely their tests would be smashed to get at the meaty insides?
